Spelling Bee in the L.I.I.

Spelling Bee is a contest that has one main objective: help the students improve their grammar, increase their vocabulary, learn new concepts and have a proper use of it. This will lead us to explain what is the meaning of “spelling bee”. It is called that because “bee” in “Spelling Bee” is an alteration of a word that means “voluntary help given by neighbors towards the accomplishment of a particular task” and descends from the Middle English word “bene”.

The Spelling Bee is an annual activity event made by students and for students of the career L.I.I. to challenge their spelling skills and abilities to memorize words, also they can have the chance to win prizes given by external sponsors, as well as rewards from teachers like two S.A.C. hours for the next period (be careful with this one, they can expire and you would not notice), apart from those prizes you can be able to receive extra points for some subjects.

This event started back in 2006, and since then it has been evolving mostly in its organization, it gets bigger every year. Every contestant has to go through several eliminatory stages, so if they are unable to spell one single word completely this will take them out of the competition.

On its 2014 edition, the winners were all women, and two of them were the same class, their names were: Jessica Sarahí del Ángel del Ángel, Nora Ivette Reyes Rodriguez and Verónica Alejandra Pérez Fuentes, who won first, second and third place respectively.

The 2015 edition was a special one, although everything went as planned, there was just one thing extraordinary, for the first time on the history of the contest there was a tie between Ornela González Alonso, Paloma Bujanos Fernández and Karen Janeth Castillo Zárate.

In the 2016 edition, the winners got a different award than in previous years; cash. The names of the students were: Paloma Bujanos Fernández, Valeria Lizette Arriaga Nava and Samantha Martínez Sánchez.

In the 2017 competition, the winners were: Carlos David Sánchez Escobar, Paloma Bujanos Fernández and Ornela González Alonso. Two of the contestants were part of the past competitions of the Spelling Bee.

In 2018, Ornela Gónzalez Alonso won the first place for the first time of all her time being a constant participant of it, the other ones were: Marcela Castillo Moctezuma and Ana Marcela Pérez Vázquez.

The last competition, which was back in 2019, had an important change; it was the first time when they were four winners: Olga Jullen García Castillo, Cristian Enrique Hernández, Carlos David Sánchez Escobar, and Andrea Patricia Ponce Zapata.

Now we are hoping that this year we will have an outstanding competition, full of new contestants and more awards ready to be given to all of them. Let’s keep doing this kind of event in the forward years!
